Cecilia is a poor waitress in a dumpy New Jersey diner who goes to the movies to escape the realities of Depression Era life. Her favorite is "The Purple Rose of Cairo." When the leading man, Tom Baxter, decides to be with Cecilia, confusion abounds.

Presents a look back at radio from the late 1930s to the mid-1940s, focusing on an extended Jewish family, all avid radio listeners, and on a young woman who eventually succeeds as a radio gossip columnist.
